Stocking Up on Supplies

Every time I go to the mall, I look for an excuse to get something for Odie. It could be new treats to try, ingredients for making his liver bits, health-related stuff, whatever floats my boat. I'm also always on the lookout for dog treat recipes that are easy to make so that the puppy won't be stuck on liver bits. I mean, not that he doesn't like it, but I could imagine that if I were to eat kibble every day and have just one type of treat, my taste buds are gonna die.

So in the past two weeks, these are the things that I bought:

Muffy waste bag refills (P79.75, Ace Hardware). I bought two packs of three rolls each, because last time I went to pet supplies stores to ask for this, I got blank faces. I don't know how those people clean up their dogs' potty mess when they're traveling. The dream for me is to buy from Amazon.com, because I saw a set of 64 ROLLS being sold for $25. I mean, It would take more than a year for me to have to purchase another roll.

Frontline Plus (P350, Pet Express) because Odie needs tick and flea protection, especially when he's in public places or when he's in school. I know, buying this from Pet Express was a wrong move. So many retailers are selling this for much cheaper. Oh, and Pendragon Vet said that you can buy one vial for big dogs and just divide the dosage to save money :D

Heartgard (P150, Pet Express) as a heartworm preventative. I've read some things and saw photos about heartworms and I swear, that kept me up for an entire night because I've been reading one link after another and who wouldn't get paranoid? Again, this item is sold cheaper in other pet supplies stores, and there's also a heartworm preventative that could be given via syringe. It would run you a little over P1000, which is again, cheaper than giving Heartgard once a month. Just ask your vet about it :)

Crazydog Train-Me! treats (P184.75, Pet Express). Odie seems to love this, and its size is very ideal for training. We finished the pack when I ran out of liver bits. It smells pretty strong, so I gotta buy another pack for impulse control.

Sleeky Sticks beef & cheese flavor (P60, Pendragon Veterinary Clinic). It was Odie's 5th month birthday and I didn't know what to get him. Well, he did win a CBC test at the Pendragon auction at the time, and if I were in Odie's place, I would hate my human for giving me a medical test on my birthday.  I cut these sticks up to little pieces to use them for training. Pendragon's auctions are still ongoing! Visit their Facebook Page to find out more.

Jerhigh Hotdog-Bar in chicken and Jasmine rice flavor (P100, Dogs & the City Eastwood) was recommended by Lovely, the human of Odie's classmate in puppy class. I tried this out in basic obedience class yesterday and boy, did I have a puppy at my beck and call! I mean, chicken and rice are one of the most comforting human food combos, so I'm not surprised he loves it.

Pedigree Dentastix green tea flavor (Pendragon Veterinary Clinic). They usually sell this at P85, but I got it for P47.25 from their auction thing. I gave Odie half a stick last night after dinner because the sticks are bigger than the puppy variant, and when he finished it, I started cutting the rest of the sticks in half. When Odie saw me doing that without giving him any, he began to weep. Odie the actor.

I'm always on the lookout for tasty, reasonably priced, SAFE treats to give Odie, so we both can keep discovering what he likes and does not like. It also helps a lot in training him so that we have treats to give him other than kibble. And of course, in the spirit of the holiday season, I would like my baby boy to join the festivities, but would also like to skip on the human table food as much as possible, to be on the safe side.

If anyone wants to let us try something and give a review, leave a comment! We're more than willing!

  1. I'm running out of ideas for treats! I can't work with just boiled liver since I can't bring it to class (so messy. And even if I try to freeze dry it for a week mukhang nasisira? WTF!). Cheese is too cheesy and it might upset their stomach if I give a lot. Raw chicken also needs a special container, plus, I can't feed them raw and then kibble (something about getting the raw meat trapped inside the kibble (which takes looong to digest compared to raw). They aren't too eager to listen when I use commercial treats...

In short: I don't know what to give them anymore! :(( Especially this coming Thursday (makeup class)... Huhu. Funny, but they do perform "down" on a verbal command when I use cheese... Can't bring it naman to class kasi madali mag-melt. :| Ano ba!

Good thing I read this, I remembered it's time for the tick and flea preventive... I've heard about that splitting the largest one... I've got to research that! Mas tipid. :|

    See you next year!!! :)

    1. Ayaw ba nila yung liver bread na ginagamit sa class? I saw in the handout that you can microwave it for a bit longer so that you won't need an oven anymore. Just refrigerate or freeze so it lasts. Sabi pala ni teacher, the goldens can have around 1/2kg of chicken liver a week. The beagles 1/4kg only haha. So far, safe naman pala kami.

I would love to suggest using parmesan cheese para hindi agad mag-melt. Gusto naman ni Odie yung kinukuha ko from the fridge (when my parents see this I'm gonna die), kaya lang aside from the cost, hindi kasi picky si Odie with food so hindi yata kami credible source for really good treats. Mukhang high value lahat sa kanya haha :|

I just downloaded a free iPhone app for Heartgard and Frontline. Just enter your puppy's info and it gives an alarm when you have to give a dosage. The Pendragon Facebook page gave a formula for the splitting thing. It's just there somewhere.

Have fun on Thursday! Would love to read all about the makeup session! :)

    2. They love it but I can't make it. I tried several settings of the microwave (to dehydrate the liver first, because I didn't want to waste anything if it didn't work), but it smelled bad (like appliance-gone-wrong bad) so I didn't want to risk it. Haha. Sakto pala. And I'm not sure, but I think the liver made their stools soft.

Sosyal! Haha I'll stick to Queso during the break siguro... I think I'll actually spend my break looking for the ideal treat. :))

      Thanks! Will look for those...

Iniisip ko parang gusto ko na lang magschedule ng makeup class for future classes. DURING THE BREAK. :))

    3. What I do is really just puree the raw liver first in our very trusty 10-year old blender, then add all the ingredients there (I feel like a witch doctor whenever I put my hands on the mushy raw liver haha), then microwave it until it solidifies and turns all brown. When it's brown na, that's when I cut it up and put it in the oven. Odie's stools also turn a bit soft when he eats a lot of it, so maybe divide the bits into 7 so they don't get too much a day? HAHA ang OC!!!

I was scared kasi to use the usual quickmelt cheese, so when I saw those exotic cheeses, I thought it's as safe as it could get HAHA. Konti lang naman eh! Not too much for the parentals to notice.

I'm actually also thinking of supplementary sessions so Odie and I can learn more. Inggit nga ako, may Thursday session kayo eh! I always look forward to going to class and would want more than 6 sessions, but kawawa naman si teacher kung tatanggalan pa natin ng holiday!

    4. Oh no I completely forgot about that part where you're supposed to puree and blend everything. We also have a VERY old blender that my mother very rarely uses to make mango shake. :| Maybe I have to buy a small blender too... :|

Haha! Mas mahal kaya kapag individual sessions ang Basic OB? :( I want to take Boo too. :(

    5. I think it's gonna be better to get a food processor than a blender. 20-year old blender na pala siya! Has been in our old house ever since I can remember. Disadvantage lang ng blender is that some stringy things from the liver get stuck in the blade so sometimes it stops working and I have to empty the blender to get those strings out first. Yung ibang liver nasasayang. If food processor, you can get the blade and clean it out without wasting much. A rubber spatula is very helpful too!

Try asking tomorrow about the individual lessons! I think it's gonna be a bit pricier because of venue rental, but maybe you can decide based on how makeup class goes. Or maybe you can ask to observe a legit individual lesson :)
