Odie's Skin Regimen

Disclaimer: We are using the products found in this entry as advised by a trusted veterinarian. Please consult your vet prior to purchasing these products and giving them to your dogs.

Whenever Odie would meet new people, he always gets compliments for having a beautiful, shiny coat. I don't know what we've been doing to achieve such, or maybe his parents have pretty good genes, but I do feel happy when people touch his coat and say nice things about it. In fact, it was only through other people that I learned to appreciate how soft and smooth his coat is!

I mentioned in one of the past entries that Odie has developed contact dermatitis. Prior to visiting Avenue Vets for a proper consultation, I was told that we might have to do a skin scrape test to find out if Odie is allergic to anything. I breathed a huge sigh of relief upon learning that the test won't be needed as the case is very minor. Thinking about it now, am I so paranoid?

Apart from keeping the home environment clean and dry, we were also advised to use some products to help heal the allergies faster, and to keep Odie's great coat in tip-top shape.

You know something's wrong when your dog
has a skin regimen and you don't.
We were told to apply Canisep directly on the pink spots 2-3 times a day, until the blemishes fade. So far, I've seen a great improvement on his skin (the affected areas hardly have any hair, so it's easy to see improvements), to think it's only been less than a week. I've read that Canisep is manufactured by Himalaya Health Care, and is composed of oils that aid in healing surgical wounds, scalds, burns, ringworm, and dermatitis, among other skin conditions in companion animals. It smells minty and feels quite cold, and it seems to work wonders! Canisep is available for P300 in all the clinics and stores that I checked out.

We were also advised to use Virbac Megaderm, an oral supplement to be given once a day for two weeks. I first tried mixing it with Odie's kibble just to make sure that it goes into his system. However, I also tried giving it without mixing anything, and it seems tasty because Odie licked his dish clean! We were given 14 4mL packets at P25 each. Megaderm has a 5:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids, and is composed of sunflower oil, evening primrose oil, and cold water fish oil. Upon pouring it on the dish, it's exactly what it was described like - OIL. The smell of the fish overpowers the other ingredients, so kissing your dog after licking Megaderm might not be a good idea because his breath would smell like fish! In terms of effectiveness though, it works WONDERS! Odie's coat now feels even better than before. I spent a considerable amount of time just running my fingers through his short coat, marvelling at how soft and shiny it has become. I hope it stays that way even after the two-week dose.

I'm so happy that we're finally given something to relieve the itching and scratching that Odie usually does at night when he's unsupervised. I hope that his beautiful, beautiful skin and coat would always be  a source of pride for us, and would remain something to behold for others.

  1. I've tried giving our older dogs fish oil capsules (of course, known source of Omega 3... or 6, don't really recall haha or both??), and it did wonders within two weeks. I also found myself just petting them, their fur feels oily-smooth, but it's not oily at all. Now I wonder if I should have more Omega 6 and 3 in my system (I don't like fish that much). Hahaha.

I've yet to try it on the big puppies, who have soft (but kind of dry :( sad) fur. I'm afraid of their stools going soft or something. Fish oil capsules! Check them out, or ask Doc Marose about it. :)

    1. We have a week more to go of his Megaderm doses :( I read in the Virbac site though that it can also be used as coat maintenance supplement to be given every other day. I mean, it's really just fish oil mixed with two other oils so who doesn't appreciate a little omega 3/6 each day, right? Odie's coat looks amazing because of Megaderm, I'm thinking if we should have it as maintenance when he's done with dermatitis treatment. I'm also thinking maybe I should try going to the derma too :D

Ask your vet if you can give Megaderm or other fish oil capsules! It seems to have no effect on Odie's stool texture. It's still firm, and it even had some fibers with glitter yesterday! Apparently, he chewed on a Christmas ornament again :| HAYAYAY!

    2. Yeah, I have yet to read if an excess of those is bad. What I read kasi is it will only make poop soft or skin oily if given excessively, but nothing life-threatening naman.

I was wondering why you said "with glitter"... I thought he had fancy poop or something. Christmas ornament pala! HAHA!

    3. I guess anything in excess is bad. HAHA. I'll definitely look into giving a regular dose.

YES! Grabe na-stress ako kasi it was bright red, I thought it was blood or some body part! Pag-check ko, may glitters :|
