How NOT to Clean a Beagle's Ears

I still haven't gone to a pet store to get some ear cleaning solution for Odie. Since I'm not a fan of doing it myself, I often left it to April. She was gone for a couple of days because she got sick though so I had to step up and be brave.

Tragedy.

Since I still have no Virbac, I resorted to apple cider vinegar (ACV). ACV is a popular thing among dog owners, based on numerous websites and online fora that I've checked out. Apparently, some people mix a teaspoon of it with dog food to aid in digestion, some rub it on the skin of their dogs as a natural tick and flea deterrent (I mean, if I were a flea, why would I lick vinegar, right?), and some mix it with 2 parts water to use as an ear cleaner.

I got me a bottle of Heinz ACV and mixed it with mineral water, dunked some cotton balls in it, and went to Odie. He was still a bit sleepy so I found it a perfect opportunity to begin the cleaning. I called him over and made him sniff some treats and he responded pretty well. I fed him a treat while cradling him so I could slowly get to touching his ears. I was able to touch the flaps, then I grabbed the opportunity and put the ACV-dipped cotton ball in his ear. He jumped and started nipping! He then shook his head which released the cotton ball from his ear. The cotton ball went to the floor. Odie saw it... and ATE it.

I immediately picked his mouth in an attempt to get it out, but he had already swallowed it, much to my dismay. I mean, ACV is good, but he swallowed a cotton ball with it! It was just the two of us in the area so I couldn't ask anyone for help. Looking back, I feel so stupid because I could have tethered him to make things easier for me. Sigh. So for the second time, I contacted Odie's vet to check if it's dangerous. Thankfully, cotton wouldn't do him any harm. I mean, Odie's already swallowed a cigarette butt and survived, so what's a cotton ball?

That same night, I went out after dinner for Odie's bathroom time. He went quickly and without a problem. Maybe ACV really is good!

And yes, there was a cotton ball. YUCK!

  1. Been looking for ACV! Didn't get the Heinz kasi it's filtered yata? Tapos sa Healthy Options out of stock :|

I got the Sleeky ear cleaner (I think this one's the cheapest among those you can find in Trinoma), but I feel it's just baby oil. Haha. Boo hates ear cleaning too, it's so hard to do alone! So far, Bon doesn't need it that much because he stays at night with our other dog who presumably cleans his ears.

Btw was supposed to comment on your previous post pero here na lang: get a Lupine leash! It has lifetime warranty (even when chewed), even here, they honor it. Then get a matching collar HAHA.

    1. Heinz was the only brand I saw. Yeah, it's filtered daw that's why it's clear. We used to have Bragg but I don't know where it went, and I don't know how long ago that was :| OH! But I just saw Bragg being sold in Sulit.com for P250. That site continues to amaze me. What don't they sell?

Now I'm scared to get any ear cleaner because the same thing might happen - cotton flies to the floor, dog swallows it. Baka may something dangerous pa in the solution. I'll leave it to the groomers and April (yay she's back!) for now. I'll never attempt to manhandle a dog alone again!

I saw those Lupines in Hobbes&Landes during Doggy Day Camp! Maybe for Christmas heehee! I read nga that lifetime warranty thing and huhu I want to buy na! Hope the designs here are good though. I want the wet paint design lead and collar :(( Mukhang mabilis madumihan though. I'll just keep washing it!!!
